ISLAMABAD, May 6: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday praised U.S. President Donald Trump for announcing a pause in Project Freedom in the Strait of Hormuz, as Islamabad moved to secure urgent liquefied natural gas supplies amid disruptions linked to the Iran war.
Sharif said Trump’s response to requests from Pakistan and other countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, “will go a long way towards advancing regional peace, stability and reconciliation during this sensitive period.”
He added that Pakistan remains committed to supporting restraint and the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.
“We are very hopeful that the current momentum will lead to a lasting agreement that secures durable peace and stability for the region and beyond,” Sharif said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is urgently seeking LNG cargoes for delivery in May as rising temperatures increase pressure on its power grid and the conflict in Iran disrupts supplies from the Persian Gulf, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
State-owned Pakistan LNG Ltd. has issued a tender for shipments to be delivered between May 12 and 14, and May 24 and 26, according to the report.
Bloomberg said Pakistan bought a spot LNG cargo last month for the first time in more than two years, as the war in Iran affected supplies from the Persian Gulf, a region that accounts for around one-fifth of global LNG production
