UNITED NATIONS, Apr 27: More than 80 countries have backed a joint statement led by Bahrain ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting, condemning alleged actions by Iran that they say are disrupting international maritime shipping and threatening global trade stability.
The statement expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemns what it described as Iran’s “egregious attacks” on neighbouring Arab states. It also raised concerns over threats to freedom of navigation in key maritime routes, stressing that such principles must be upheld without exception.
The signatories rejected any attempts to restrict vessel movement or impose transit fees in international waters, calling such actions a violation of international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The statement further warned that instability in maritime routes has had wide-ranging global consequences, including disruptions to shipping lanes, increased transport costs, and volatility in energy markets and supply chains.
It added that the impact has been especially severe on vulnerable nations, including countries already facing food insecurity, which rely heavily on stable global shipping routes for essential imports.
The move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, with maritime security and freedom of navigation emerging as key points of dispute at the international level.
