PARIS, Jul 15: More than 160 people were arrested in Paris and Lyon following clashes and disturbances that erupted after France's 2-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, according to broadcaster BFMTV.
The Paris Police Prefecture said 141 people were detained in the Paris region after Tuesday night's match, with most arrests linked to the alleged use of firework mortars directed at police officers and emergency service personnel.
Authorities said no serious injuries were reported during the incidents.
In Lyon, several hundred people gathered at Place Bellecour to watch the semifinal. Following Spain's victory, small groups reportedly threw projectiles, including fireworks, at police, prompting riot officers to intervene.
Around 20 people were arrested in Lyon. Local authorities said those detained were born between 2002 and 2011, adding that no injuries or significant property damage were reported.
