TEHRAN, July 11: Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Saturday vowed to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, declaring that retribution was "the demand of the nation" and "must certainly" be carried out.
In a message delivered during funeral ceremonies for the late supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei pledged to avenge "the innocent blood" of Ali Khamenei and others killed during the recent conflict with the United States and Israel.
Ali Khamenei was laid to rest on Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad after being killed in US-Israeli strikes that began in late February and triggered Iranian retaliatory attacks.
The remarks come despite a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire memorandum signed in June aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions have flared again this week following attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic waterway, with both Washington and Tehran carrying out fresh military strikes.
The renewed rhetoric also follows reports that Israel shared intelligence with the United States alleging Iran had developed a new plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, prompting Trump to warn of massive retaliation if such an attempt were made.
Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remained out of public view as his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, was buried in Mashhad in the early hours of Friday local time. Other members of the Khamenei family attended the private ceremony, which followed days of public funeral events for the slain leader and several close family members killed alongside him on the first day of US-Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28. Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen publicly since that day.
