MUSCAT, July 17: A commercial tanker was deliberately attacked by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, sustaining minor structural damage but remaining seaworthy, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Friday.

According to UKMTO, the incident occurred about 19 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman, where the tanker reported being struck on its port side by an unknown projectile.

The agency said all crew members were safe and accounted for, with no injuries reported. It also confirmed there was no environmental impact or pollution resulting from the attack, and the vessel continued its voyage to its next scheduled port of call.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Following the incident, UKMTO advised all vessels transiting the area to exercise heightened caution and immediately report any suspicious activity to the maritime security agency.

The attack comes amid escalating regional tensions and growing security concerns over commercial shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
