LONDON, Oct 14: A container ship weighing approximately 50,000 tonnes was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting inbound through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, October 13, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.

In Warning 172-26, UKMTO said it received a time-late report of the incident, which occurred at approximately 1640 UTC. The vessel sustained minor damage but was able to continue its passage, with no casualties reported.

The source of the projectile and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Authorities are investigating.

UKMTO advised vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to the maritime security agency.

The incident adds to a series of reported attacks on commercial vessels in and around the strategically important waterway, amid heightened maritime security concerns in the region.
