DUBAI, Aug 4: A cargo vessel reported being struck by an "unknown projectile" while sailing near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting an investigation by maritime authorities and a renewed safety advisory for ships transiting the region.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman. The cargo vessel broadcast an emergency message over VHF Channel 16 stating that it had been hit by an unidentified projectile.

UKMTO said authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No immediate details were released regarding the extent of any damage to the vessel or whether there were injuries among the crew.
