DOHA, Feb 26: The Omani Club of Oman has officially applied to host the 41st edition of the Gulf Club Cup Winners Championship in March 2025, seeking approval from the Gulf Handball Committee. Younis Al-Azzan, the head of the Omani delegation in the ongoing Gulf Club Championship, expressed the club’s desire to organize this prestigious event in the Sultanate next year, revealing that the Gulf Committee has granted initial approval for the hosting.

Commending the successful organization of the current edition (40) by Al-Arabi Club and Qatar’s warm hospitality, Shabib Al-Hajri, a member of the Gulf Handball Committee, acknowledged that such efficiency is expected from the people of Qatar. Al-Hajri emphasized the significance of the notable teams participating in the tournament, anticipating fierce competition, particularly in the upcoming rounds.

In recent tournament action, Al-Kuwait secured a well-deserved victory over Maliha from the UAE, finishing with a score of 32-28 (first half, 16-13). This win earned Al-Kuwait the first two points in the second group, which also includes Al-Rayyan Clubs of Qatar and Al-Shabab of Bahrain. The Gulf Championship for the handball cup champion clubs, hosted by Al-Arabi, will continue until March 5.

In the first group, today’s matches will feature Al-Dair Al-Bahraini facing Amman of Oman at four in the afternoon, followed by Burgan meeting Al-Arabi of Qatar at six in the evening. The matches are scheduled to take place at Al-Duhail Sports Hall.

Burgan, having suffered a loss against Al-Dair Al-Bahraini the day before with a score of 25-27, aims to recover and secure a spot in the semi-finals despite the challenging task ahead. The team is grappling with a lack of cohesion, with the departure of nearly nine players from the previous season and coach Saeed Hegazy recently taking charge after the conclusion of foreign player participation and delays in the arrival of professionals.
