MUSCAT, Jun 25: Oman has said future arrangements governing the Strait of Hormuz will not involve the introduction of transit fees, as it expressed support for a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing tensions and improving regional stability.

Oman’s Foreign Minister made the remarks during a joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States in Bahrain, according to the Oman News Agency.

The minister emphasized Oman’s special responsibility as a country bordering the strategic waterway, saying Muscat would continue supporting international efforts to ensure freedom of navigation and secure maritime passage in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Oman called for the restoration of safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and said the US-Iran memorandum should achieve its objectives of promoting peace and stability in the region.
