Oman Rejects Iran’s Proposed Hormuz Fees Despite IRGC Claim

MUSCAT, Sep 3: Oman has rejected a proposal by Iran to jointly impose service fees on commercial vessels using the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, the New York Post reported Thursday, citing a senior regional official.

According to the report, Muscat declined to approve charges for environmental and security services, even voluntarily. A US official had separately told the newspaper last week that the terms of a proposed revenue-sharing arrangement had not yet been finalized.

The report directly contradicts an earlier claim by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman Hossein Mohebbi, who said Iran and Oman had reached agreements on their respective shares of the strait’s waters and revenues.

Mohebbi reportedly linked the agreement to a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart, Badr Albusaidi, in Tehran. The conflicting accounts leave the status of any proposed fee or revenue-sharing arrangement unclear.
