Oman police warn of organised begging networks exploiting vulnerable people

MUSCAT, Aug 28: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned that some begging cases in the Sultanate may be linked to organised networks that exploit vulnerable individuals and control their activities for financial gain.

The police urged citizens and residents not to encourage begging and instead report suspected cases of exploitation to the authorities. The ROP said some people seen begging in public places could be operating under the direction of networks that manage their activities and benefit financially from the proceeds.

“Behind many beggars is a network that exploits and manages them,” the ROP said, urging the public to help authorities identify such networks and protect people who may be being exploited.

Members of the public can report cases of begging or suspected exploitation through the dedicated police hotline at 1166.

Oman’s Penal Code prohibits begging in locations including mosques, streets, public and private places and shops. Those found guilty of begging can face up to one year in prison and a fine of RO100.

The police warning comes as part of efforts to curb organised begging and address the exploitation of vulnerable people, while encouraging the public to report suspected cases rather than provide direct support to organised begging activities.
