MUSCAT, May 30: Oman’s Maritime Security Center has issued a warning to vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz after a floating object suspected to be a naval mine was spotted within Omani territorial waters.
According to the advisory, the object was sighted west of the inshore traffic zone in the strategically important waterway, prompting authorities to urge mariners to exercise heightened caution while transiting the area.
The center did not provide further details on the nature of the object or whether efforts were underway to recover or neutralize it. Authorities also did not immediately indicate whether shipping routes would be affected.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, serving as a key route for global oil and gas exports. Security concerns in the waterway have intensified in recent months amid heightened regional tensions and increased military activity.
Omani authorities said they are monitoring the situation and advised vessels to remain vigilant and follow guidance from maritime security agencies while navigating the area.
