MUSCAT, Jun 25: Oman, in coordination with the International Maritime Organization, has issued updated guidelines for vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at ensuring safer and more efficient maritime movement through the strategic waterway.

The new measures establish a dedicated transit corridor for ships passing through the strait. The designated route extends 80.7 nautical miles from the waiting area to waypoint six, including a main transit corridor stretching 62.2 nautical miles.

Under the updated system, vessel movements will be organized into designated transit groups, with coordination and communication maintained through International VHF Channel 16 and other approved maritime communication channels.

Oman said the guidelines are intended to enhance navigation management, maintain maritime safety, and support the secure passage of commercial vessels through one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman and Iran, is a critical global energy corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass.
