Oman, Iran Stress Sovereign Rights in Strait of Hormuz Waters

MUSCAT, Jun 23: Oman and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz while emphasizing their sovereignty and sovereign rights over territorial waters in the strategic waterway.

The remarks came in a joint statement issued after talks in Muscat during a visit by Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to the statement, the two sides discussed issues related to the Strait of Hormuz under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and agreed to continue consultations through a joint working group between their foreign ministries.

The working group will seek to reach an agreement on the future administration of navigation in the strait, related services and associated costs, in line with international standards.

Oman and Iran also stressed that any arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz must fully respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two coastal states.
