Oman boost chances, Yemen eliminated

BASRA, Jan 9: Oman defeated Yemen by 3-2 to enhance their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup on Monday. Oman opened the scoring through an own goal by, Ali Abbas in the 2nd minute. Abdul Wasea Al-Matari equalized for Yemen after the early shocker in the 12th minute. Omar Al-Dahi gave Yemen a deserved lead in the 30th minute. Arshad Al-Alawi settled Oman nerves with the equalizer some few minutes to recess.

Essam Al-Subhi scored the winning goal in the early minutes of the second half. Yemen officially bid farewell to the championship with their second straight loss. Meanwhile, Kuwait Coach Rui Bento said on Monday that the team will do whatever necessary to win against the UAE on Tuesday in the second round of the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup. “Even though we lack time, we are building a team for the future with youth and amateurs, as the main target in mind is to gain experience, but that does not mean we will not perform,” said Bento in a press conference held in Basra.

On his part, Faisal Zayed said that the UAE have a good team from with professional players, but the Kuwaiti team aim to achieve a positive result in the match. Kuwait lost the first round of the tournament against Qatar and seek to improve its situation in Group B alongside the UAE and Bahrain.(KUNA)
