MUSCAT, Oct 12: Oman has evacuated an injured crew member from the merchant vessel JOHN K after a fire broke out in its engine room, the country’s Maritime Security Centre announced Monday evening.
An Omani Royal Air Force helicopter carried out the medical evacuation in coordination with the centre, approximately 44 nautical miles off South Al Batinah Governorate. The injured crew member was airlifted for medical treatment.
The centre did not disclose the cause of the fire or the severity of the crew member’s injuries.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported receiving a delayed report from a verified source that a container vessel had been struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting inbound through the Strait of Hormuz.
In Warning 166-26, UKMTO listed the incident date as October 11, with the time yet to be confirmed. Authorities are investigating the incident, while vessels have been advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.
UKMTO did not identify the vessel or provide details about possible casualties or damage.
The two reports did not establish any connection between the fire aboard the JOHN K and the projectile incident in the Strait of Hormuz.
