NEW YORK, Feb 7, (Agencies): A tragic incident unfolded in New York City as a resident lost his life after being struck by two vehicles near his home. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Wilbert de Jesus Cordero, was crossing the street at a Bronx intersection when the unfortunate incident occurred around 4 am on Sunday, according to information provided by the NYPD.

Reports indicate that a 24-year-old male, driving a southbound Mercedes Benz on White Plains Road, initially collided with Cordero, propelling him into the northbound lanes. Subsequently, a 25-year-old male operating a northbound BMW allegedly struck Cordero again, as detailed by the police.

Emergency responders swiftly transported Cordero to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Mercedes, an unidentified 24-year-old male, remained at the scene and cooperated with the ongoing investigation. As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges have been filed against him.

The driver of the BMW, identified as Adam Vilajeti, fled the scene following the incident but was located three hours later. Vilajeti is facing charges that include leaving the scene of an accident, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, and driving while intoxicated.

Cordero, originally from the Dominican Republic, had recently relocated to New York and was employed at Martin Aponte's store. Aponte, sharing details about Cordero, expressed sorrow over the tragic incident. "Last night, he was in the barber shop, and he was going home," Aponte remarked. "Maybe he didn't take care when crossing the street."

The NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad is actively examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
