NEW DELHI, Jun 13: China has rejected at least three consignments of Indian dried red chillies and suspended imports from three Indian exporters after detecting excessive levels of methamidophos pesticide residues, according to a report by The Hindu BusinessLine.
The move has raised concerns among exporters about stricter quality inspections by China, India’s largest trading partner and the biggest overseas buyer of Indian dry red chillies. Chinese authorities reportedly found residue levels of methamidophos above permissible limits in the shipments. The pesticide is considered highly toxic and can affect the nervous system.
The development follows recent concerns raised by Chinese authorities over Indian rice shipments, prompting industry observers to question whether tighter food safety checks could pose a broader challenge for Indian agricultural exports to the Chinese market.
Earlier, after Japan, neighbouring Nepal has also reportedly banned mangoes and several other fruits imported from India. The development came after the Balen Shah-led administration imposed a swift ban, following reports that border quarantine inspectors detected high levels of chemical pesticide residues in imported fruit consignments, according to The Rising Nepal
