Norway Calls for Infantino to Resign as Argentina, Mexico Back FIFA Chief

ZURICH, Aug. 7: The president of the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), Lise Klaveness, has called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, saying he has lost the federation’s confidence following the governing body’s handling of a failed proposal to sell stakes in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup and other competitions.

Klaveness said the NFF no longer trusted Infantino after years of growing concerns over FIFA’s governance. Her remarks came despite FIFA issuing an apology and withdrawing the controversial plan, which proposed creating a $20 billion subsidiary and selling up to a 20% stake to private investors after widespread opposition from member associations.

Meanwhile, the football associations of Argentina and Mexico voiced support for Infantino, praising his leadership and FIFA’s decision to admit mistakes and abandon the proposal. Argentina’s Football Association said it backed Infantino’s efforts to develop the global game while welcoming FIFA’s acknowledgment that the proposal had created uncertainty. Mexico’s Football Federation also reaffirmed its support, emphasizing respect for FIFA’s institutional processes and governance.

The differing positions highlight a growing split within world football, with UEFA and regional bodies including CONMEBOL and CONCACAF criticizing FIFA’s governance, while some national federations continue to support Infantino’s leadership.
