TEHRAN, Apr 29: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi is facing what her family and supporters describe as a “slow death” in prison, as Iranian authorities continue to block her release on medical leave and refuse to transfer her to a specialist hospital despite doctors’ recommendations.
According to the Narges Foundation, Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization in Zanjan has officially confirmed that Mohammadi requires at least one month of medical leave. However, the foundation said Tehran’s prosecutor is still preventing her release, while judicial authorities have declined to move her to the hospital for treatment.
Her lawyers, who visited her on April 28, said her condition is critical. The statement said her blood pressure has recently fluctuated dangerously between 15 and 17 and has not responded to medication. Mohammadi has also lost more than 19 kilograms and is suffering from chest pain, headaches and recurring nausea.
The foundation said two cardiology specialists in Zanjan concluded that she cannot be treated there and should instead be under the care of her doctor at Pars Hospital in Tehran.
French lawyer Shirin Ardakani described the denial of urgent medical care as “a form of torture.” Mohammadi’s brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, said her condition amounts to a “slow death,” while her daughter Kiana Rahmani said more than 138 days of medical neglect have left her on the brink of death.
