WASHINGTON, May 1: Iran has put forward a revised proposal to the United States outlining a phased approach to potential negotiations, prioritizing maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz ahead of nuclear discussions, while excluding its missile program from the agenda, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The proposal signals a shift in Tehran’s earlier stance, notably dropping its demand for an immediate lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports as a precondition for talks. Instead, Iran is now suggesting parallel discussions: addressing conditions for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz alongside US commitments to halt attacks and begin easing the blockade.
Under the reported framework, nuclear negotiations would be deferred to a later stage, contingent on progress in earlier talks and accompanied by potential US sanctions relief. The missile program remains outside the scope of the proposed dialogue, consistent with Iran’s long-standing position.
The Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, said Iran has conveyed to mediators its readiness to begin talks in Pakistan as early as next week, provided Washington responds positively to the revised proposal.
The development comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing efforts by intermediaries to revive diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
