JERUSALEM, Jun 21: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and will continue military pressure on Hezbollah, stressing that diplomatic developments will not limit Israel’s security policy or military freedom.
“As long as I am prime minister of Israel, that will not happen,” Netanyahu said on Sunday, referring to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. “Whatever diplomatic developments may occur, I will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.”
His remarks came as US-Iran talks were underway in Switzerland, but Netanyahu indicated that the negotiations would not change Israel’s approach toward Iran or its regional allies.
Speaking at a memorial marking the 50th anniversary of the death of his brother Yoni Netanyahu, who was killed while leading the Entebbe hostage rescue operation, the Israeli premier said Israel would continue defending its vital national interests.
Netanyahu claimed that Israeli operations against Iran over the past year had removed an immediate threat, saying Tehran would already have nuclear weapons without Israel’s actions.
He also said Israel would remain in its security zone in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to protect northern Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks. Netanyahu added that Israel would not give up what he described as achievements gained through military operations against Iran and its regional allies.
