Netanyahu Camp Blames Trump for Blocking Iran Regime-Change Effort

JERUSALEM, May 29: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's allies are blaming US President Donald Trump for blocking Israeli-backed efforts to topple Iran’s leadership during the recent conflict, according to a report by Al-Monitor citing a senior political source.

The report said Netanyahu views the emerging US-Iran agreement as a political and strategic setback. At the same time, members of his inner circle believe the Iranian government could have been destabilized or overthrown had Washington supported Israeli proposals earlier in the war.

According to the report, one such proposal involved Kurdish forces entering Iran under US and Israeli air cover. A senior Israeli intelligence source described the plan as detailed and the result of significant preparation and investment, but said Washington halted the initiative at the last moment.

The source also claimed that the Trump administration blocked additional Israeli operational proposals, warning that the long-term consequences of the decision could be significant.

One associate of Netanyahu was quoted as saying the prime minister’s “hands are tied” and that he has little choice but to follow Washington’s lead. Another source cited in the report suggested Netanyahu has become increasingly frustrated with the current US approach toward Iran.

The report further said that growing concern in Israel over a potential US-Iran agreement has fueled speculation about Netanyahu’s political future, including whether he could consider stepping down before the next elections and seek a plea bargain in his ongoing corruption trial.

Neither the Israeli government nor the White House immediately commented on the claims reported by Al-Monitor.
