Nepal flood death toll rises to 623, more than 1,100 missing

KATHMANDU, Aug 29: The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Nepal rose to 623 on Saturday as search teams continued recovering bodies swept downstream by swollen rivers.

Nepal Police said 616 bodies had been recovered, including 233 in Chitwan and 158 in Nawalparasi East, among the worst-hit areas. Dozens of other victims were found in Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot after the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers overflowed. Some bodies were recovered as far as the border with India.

At least 638 people remain missing in Nepal, including 511 foreigners. In neighboring China, seven people were killed and 554 remained missing, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Authorities said 2,301 people had been rescued or treated for injuries, with many survivors from Nuwakot and Rasuwa. Police said 27 officers remain unaccounted for, while 4,811 personnel have been deployed across affected areas for rescue and recovery operations.
