National Flags at Half-Mast: India Mourns the Passing of Kuwait’s Amir

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 17: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received on Sunday at the Amiri Airport Representative of the Indian Government and Minister of Oil and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and his accompanying delegation who arrived in Kuwait to offer condolences over the demise of late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Indian official extended his condolences on the occasion to His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah, His Highness Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Sabah, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, His Highness Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and to Al-Sabah family and Sheikhs. Upon arrival, the Indian Minister was received by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Sabah. H.E Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, delivered letters from the Hon’ble President and Hon’ble Prime Minister of India conveying condolences on the sad demise of late Amir, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

In her message to H.H the Amir of Kuwait, Hon’ble President of India, H.E. Smt. Droupadi Murmu said “It is with a sense of great sorrow and deep regret that we have learnt of the passing away of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait. His Highness’s contribution to the development and prosperity of the State of Kuwait was considerable. He will always be remembered for the tireless efforts he made for the well-being of the Kuwaiti people. In his passing away, India has lost a good friend and the large expatriate Indian community in Kuwait has lost someone whose care and benevolence they enjoyed. India is united in grief with the leadership and the people of Kuwait in mourning the demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

In his message addressed to H.H the Amir of Kuwait, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, H.E Mr. Narendra Modi mentioned that “The Government and the people of India are deeply saddened by the news of the passing away of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Amir of the State of Kuwait. Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was an exemplary leader whose wisdom, vision, and dedication have left an indelible mark not only on the history of Kuwait but also on the India-Kuwait relationship. His efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas further reinforced the historic ties between our two countries. The large Indian community in Kuwait always benefitted from his fatherly care and concern. The people of India will forever remember him for his commitment to ensuring the supply of a large amount of medical oxygen from Kuwait to India during the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic which saved countless lives.”

In his message to H.H the Prime Minister of Kuwait, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, H.E Mr. Narendra Modi remarked “It is with profound sadness that I have received the unfortunate news of the passing of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Amir of the State of Kuwait. Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait made significant strides in its quest for development, for which he would be fondly remembered by generations to come. His demise is a great loss, not only for the people of Kuwait but also for the large Indian community in Kuwait, which always benefitted from his fatherly care and concern. India stands in grief with Your Highness, the Government and its people in mourning the demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.”

As a mark of respect to the late Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away on 16 December 2023, India declared a day of national mourning on 17 December 2023. The day of mourning was observed throughout India and abroad during which the national flag flew half-mast at all Government of India buildings across India & all over the world and all official entertainment activities were cancelled.

In Kuwait, the Indian national flag flew half-mast at the Embassy of India on 17 December 2023. On this occasion, Hon’ble Minister, Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, joined Indian Embassy officials and the Indian community in Kuwait, to pay homage by observing a 2-minute silence today on the sad demise of late Amir. India stands with Kuwait in this moment of grief.
