HOUSTON, Oct 16: Tesla has unveiled its long-delayed next-generation Roadster electric sports car, equipped with SpaceX-developed thrusters that enabled it to perform aerial manoeuvres during a demonstration in Texas on Thursday. Chief Executive Elon Musk said production was planned to begin in 2028.

The unveiling took place at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, near Waco, Texas, almost nine years after Tesla first announced the redesigned Roadster in November 2017. The vehicle was initially expected to enter production years ago, but the launch was repeatedly postponed.

During the demonstration, the vehicle drove up a ramp and travelled upside down using a suction system before turning in midair and landing on its wheels with the assistance of thrusters. It was also shown jumping over a line of Tesla vehicles.

The demonstration highlighted the technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk's rocket company. However, questions remain over the extent to which the vehicle's aerial capabilities could be used outside controlled demonstrations and whether particular configurations would be permitted on public roads.

Musk said the Roadster would be a car that people could own and drive, while acknowledging that its legality could vary by jurisdiction.

Tesla claims the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96.6 kph) in less than one second when its thrusters are engaged and reach a top speed exceeding 230 mph (370 kph). These figures are manufacturer claims and have not been independently established through the demonstration.

The new Roadster follows the model Tesla introduced in 2017, when the company advertised a range of up to 620 miles (998 kilometres) on a full charge. Tesla's current published Roadster specifications still list that range, but the latest unveiling did not establish that the redesigned vehicle would achieve the same figure.

Tesla has yet to announce the new model's final retail price or disclose a complete set of battery specifications. The company has previously accepted substantial reservations for the vehicle, including $250,000 deposits for limited Founders Series reservations under its earlier programme.

Although the Roadster's unusual performance features have attracted attention, its planned 2028 production date means buyers will have to wait further for the long-promised sports car to reach the market.
