BAGHDAD, Aug. 17: Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has called on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to refrain from carrying out strikes on Iraqi territory, warning that such attacks would be damaging to Iraq and serve the interests of its enemies.

In a statement posted Monday, al-Sadr said that while an attack on Iraq by an enemy could be regarded as an act of resistance, strikes against Iraqi territory by Iran, which he described as a “brother,” would be “sad.”

He specifically urged the IRGC not to target any part of Iraq, including Baghdad and the Kurdistan region, regardless of whether the strikes were carried out by Iraqi officials or other actors.

“I repeat my statement: The brothers in the Revolutionary Guard must not strike Iraqi territory,” al-Sadr said, warning that such actions would amount to giving satisfaction to Iraq’s enemies.

Al-Sadr called for God to protect the region from further wars and safeguard Iraq from dangers “whatever their source.”
