Municipality tasked to build labor cities

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 21: The Council of Ministers has assigned the Kuwait Municipality to follow up and complete all necessary measures to provide a sufficient number of suitable sites for housing workers, or to establish labor cities that serve each of the areas (urban and industrial) for the benefit of the Management of State Property Department of Ministry of Finance to be auctioned to the private sector provided that it is built within a specified period of time in accordance with the texts and procedures in force, reports Al-Qabas daily. A letter issued by the Secretariat General of the Council of Ministers, regarding the labor cities project in Kuwait, a copy of which is seen by Al- Qabas daily, shows the Council was briefed on Jan 24, 2022, about the recommendations of the Public Services Committee, and the speech of the Minister of Oil containing the vision of the oil sector which says there is no need to establish labor cities for oil sector contractors’ employees, due to the imminent completion of the current capital projects and the scarcity of future projects, and if any, the storage areas can accommodate these employees, and the oil sector also proposes that these labor cities be implemented at the state level all by the competent authorities.

The letter indicated that the Services Committee reviewed the letter of the Ministry of Public Works, which includes the statement that Ministerial Resolution No. (21) of 2021 regarding the formation of a higher committee to coordinate and follow up on all requirements, procedures and decisions related to labor housing and the establishment of labor cities. The council discussed the letter of the Minister of Finance, which includes the statement of the Public- Private Partnership Projects Authority that none of the qualified companies have submitted their bids for the labor cities project (the South Jahra city), which resulted in the Supreme Committee issuing its decision to cancel the proposal of the labor cities project.
