Municipal Council targets social cohesion through cafés initiative

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 15: Members of the Municipal Council Abdullah Al- Enezi and Fahd Al-Khunain have submitted a proposal to allocate sites for the establishment of traditional cafés in Mutlaa and Sabah Al-Ahmad residential cities, in coordination with the Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) and the Ministry of Social Affairs. In the preamble of the proposal, the proponents pointed out that in light of the ongoing urban expansion—particularly in newly developed cities like Mutlaa and Sabah Al-Ahmad, there is an increasing need to establish social facilities with a heritage character to strengthen community cohesion and preserve cultural identity.

They explained that traditional cafés were identified as an appropriate model in this regard, as they provide a social space that brings together different segments of society in a simple, authentic, and traditional setting. They stressed that the proposal offers multiple benefits, foremost among them is strengthening social ties, as traditional cafés serve as informal gathering places for friends and families, in addition to reviving folk heritage by reflecting the traditional Kuwaiti character and supporting the preservation of cultural heritage through their architectural design and activities. They added that such cafés could serve as venues for cultural and community events, including poetry evenings, discussion forums, and traditional games.

They pointed out that the proposal, once implemented, will generate job opportunities, support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and provide a safe and modest environment for the elderly and for individuals seeking tranquility and privacy.
