LONDON — Multiple people have died following a collision involving a police vehicle and a car near Middlesbrough in North East England, authorities said Saturday.

The crash occurred on the A66 in South Bank at approximately 3:39 a.m. local time (0239 GMT), according to Cleveland Police.

"Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities," a force spokesman said in a statement. "There are significant emergency vehicles on the scene, and the road will remain closed for some time."

Police said officers are working to identify the victims and notify their families.
