Mourners, preachers quarrel in graveyard – Call to set up police post

KUWAIT CITY, April 29: Verbal altercations between mourners and a preacher escalated into a fistfight in Sulaibikhat Graveyard Thursday after the latter made a controversial statement regarding ‘takfiri’. Initial investigations revealed the mourners regarded the statement as a form of contravening funeral traditions which usually consist of eulogizing the deceased, imploring for mercy for the soul of the departed, and condoling those whom the deceased left behind.

Meanwhile, officials in charge of the graveyard asked the Interior Ministry to establish a permanent police post in the area to prevent any untoward incident and to organize the funeral procession in accordance with a mechanism for the entrance and exit of mourners.

The officials also called for laying down strict regulations to prevent those who deliver sermons from using the graveyard as platforms for expressing their political and extreme ideologies, as such acts mar the funeral proceedings that are supposed to be solemn.
