MADRID, Aug 9: Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has questioned Bernardo Silva’s physical condition after the Portuguese midfielder made his first appearance for the club in a preseason victory over Ferencvaros.
Silva, one of Real Madrid’s new signings, came on during the second half of the 2-1 win two days ago. Mourinho, however, expressed concerns over the midfielder’s fitness following his summer break.
“He didn’t do any activity during the holiday and showed that he was in very poor physical condition,” Mourinho said.
Despite his criticism, the 63-year-old coach was positive about Silva’s potential, praising his mentality and describing him as a player with the qualities needed to succeed at the highest level.
Silva joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City. He turned 32 on Aug. 10 after spending the summer representing Portugal at the 2026 World Cup before taking a break following a demanding season.
Against Ferencváros, Silva operated in central midfield rather than on the right, where he has played regularly in recent seasons. Mourinho explained the decision by saying Silva still needs to develop physically and that he lacked some strength during the game.
“I put him in the No. 10 position, where he also performs very well,” Mourinho said.
Silva arrives at Real Madrid with a wealth of experience, having won six Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time with Manchester City. Mourinho will expect that experience to play a key role as he builds his new-look Real Madrid squad.
