WASHINGTON, Jun 23: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that a significant portion of funds made available to Iran under a new arrangement would be directed toward purchasing American food and medicine under strict Treasury oversight.
“Any money Iranians receive is for Iranians,” Bessent told CNBC, adding that the US Treasury would monitor how the funds are spent.
He said a “very large share” of the available money would be used to buy essential goods, including food and medical supplies, rather than being provided as unrestricted financial support to the Iranian government.
Bessent’s comments follow earlier statements from US President Donald Trump that Washington would not provide direct cash payments to Tehran, but would instead use controlled Iranian funds to purchase American agricultural products such as corn and wheat.
The arrangement comes amid diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran, with US officials emphasizing that any financial relief would be subject to monitoring and restrictions.
