‘Most cases are treated well’ – 89 Filipino maids repatriated

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 29: French magazine, ‘Elle,’ revealed that the Philippine authorities arranged for the return of 89 domestic workers from Kuwait to Manila through a repatriation program implemented in February, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Hans Cacdac said; “We recorded 22 dubious deaths last year in Kuwait, probably suicide cases.”

Meanwhile, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ernesto Abella affirmed that three percent of Filipina domestic workers suffer from abuse. “Most cases are treated well and receive $400 Dollar monthly,” he added.

More than 1,200 agencies are working in the field of recruiting domestic workers in the Philippines; while more than 260,000 Filipinos are working in Kuwait.

The French magazine also reported that 6,000 Filipinos – mostly housemaids – have returned to Manila during the period of crisis between the Philippines and Kuwait which ended last May when the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on the employment of Filipinos.
