Monument ‘depicting’ Kuwait-Pakistan solidarity inaugurated in Muzaffarabad

Al-Bahar leads Kuwait’s team to Kashmir event

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan, March 27, (KUNA): Kuwait-Pakistan solidarity monument was inaugurated on Wednesday here in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan administered Kashmir that was affected badly during the 2005 earthquake. A delegation of Kuwait Fund led by Director of Operations, Waleed Al-Bahar attended the inauguration ceremony of the monument that would serve as the symbol of strong ties between the two brotherly countries.

On the occasion, Waleed Al-Bahar said, “It is indeed a great pleasure and privilege to be here, representing the Kuwait fund in this momentous occasion to celebrate the inauguration of the Kuwait-Pakistan solidarity monument. I would like to thank the government of Pakistan for making the site available for the monument. The prominence of this area is that this is an area in Pakistan administered Kashmir where the devastating 2005 earthquake occurred.”

Kuwait Fund extended its support by granting a concessionary loan of about USD 50 million towards the reconstruction of selected higher educational institutions to restore equitable access to higher quality education, said Al-Bahar. He said, “This monument symbolizes the friendship and solidarity between the people and the governments of the State of Kuwait and Pakistan. Today’s ceremony marks an important milestone in the development of mutual cooperation between Kuwait Fund and Pakistan.

” Development cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait Fund dates back to 1976, when the Fund participated in the financing of the Guddu-Karachi power transmission project with a loan equivalent to about USD 43 million, he noted, adding that since then and until today Kuwait Fund has extended 18 soft loans to Pakistan, with a total amount of about USD 441 million to participate in the financing of development projects in various sectors such as energy, water, transportation and education.

Cooperation
The delegation head said that Kuwait looks forward to further cooperation with Pakistan to serve common objective of development and to strengthen the friendship between the two countries.

The Deputy Head of the Kuwait mission in Islamabad, Khalid Jasim Al-Yasin in a statement to KUNA on the occasion said, “Kuwait was among the first countries that came in front to help Pakistan during the 2005 earthquake.

The government of the State of Kuwait never hesitates to help the brotherly countries in the time of need. Kuwait-Pakistan relationships are time tested and we look forward to cooperate with Pakistan in other fields as well.” The Kuwait Fund delegation also included Operation Economist, Ibrahim Al-Kulaib and Dhahouk Al-Banwan, Manager of Monument department in Kuwait.

For her part, Dhahouk Al-Banwan said, “We feel very glad to open this monument here and the people here in Pakistan were very cooperative and friendly. We feel proud on this inauguration as a symbol of Kuwait support in the education sector and looking forward to having another monument in Pakistan.” Pakistan’s Director General of Earthquake Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Authority, Brig.

Aftab Qureshi on the occasion said, “Kuwait Pakistan solidarity monument is going to serve as a symbol of brotherhood, friendship and appreciation bestowed by the State of Kuwait. On behalf of government and people of Pakistan we express our gratitude and thanks to His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for timely support to Pakistan for reconstruction of earthquake effected infrastructure in Pakistan administered Kashmir.

He said that 30 educational projects have been completed through Kuwait’s support and handed over to the concerned education departments, adding that all these educational facilities are fully functional and providing quality education to the students of earthquake effected areas. Several high officials of government of Pakistan participated in the delightful inauguration ceremony.
