KUWAIT CITY, Nov 15: In a judicial precedent, the first of its kind, the Civil Court on Monday obligated the Ministry of Interior, the director of the Central Prison, and one of the prisoners impersonating a member of the ruling family to pay KD 55,000 as compensation to a citizen who was swindled and defrauded by the convict via phone inside his cell in the Central Prison.

According to the case file, the defense counsel representing the plaintiff, Lawyer Ayed Al-Rashidi, accused the Ministry of Interior, the director of the Central Prison, and the prisoner who defrauded his client by calling him daily while he was inside the Central Prison and claiming that he was a “sheikh” from the ruling family. The lawyer blamed the Ministry of Interior and the director of the Central Prison for the shortcomings in their work. He asked who allowed the accused to possess a mobile phone while in the Central Prison, as the latter used it to mislead his client into investing in a major project and claimed that he is a member of the ruling family.

The Court of Cassation had sentenced the prisoner to a jail term of ten years on several charges of fraud, and impersonating prominent figures from the ruling family and businessmen while in Central Prison, as well as swindling celebrities and fashionistas, and also booking a private jet for a woman who he had promised to marry.
