Move to curb food wastage

KUWAIT CITY, April 17: Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently held a meeting with the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies to discuss about the possibility of distributing ration food to deserving people by home delivery, reports Al-Rai daily quoting informed sources.

They said the required preparations for implementing this plan and the body to be assigned for the project were also discussed during the meeting. The sources indicated that the ministry is planning to soon launch discussions with Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and National Fund for Small and Medium Enterprises to discuss the mechanism for implementing this plan.

They said Ministry of Commerce and Industry is seeking radical changes to the local ration system in order to eliminate wastage in some cooperative societies and to ensure the shares are given to the deserving people.

The sources clarified that the proposed ideas include offering the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies the responsibility of distributing ration shares through home delivery. A legal reason was raised by Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to allow this, citing that distribution of ration shares is part of services not commodities.
