KUWAIT CITY, May 20: The General Directorate of Traffic has urged parents to closely monitor their children during the ongoing secondary school examination period, warning against allowing minors to drive vehicles without a valid driving licence.
Assistant Director of Traffic Awareness at the General Directorate of Traffic, Abdullah Bouhassan, said awareness messages are being directed to parents due to the recurring traffic violations and accidents involving underage drivers recorded annually during exam season.
Bouhassan stressed that guardians must not hand over vehicle keys to minors or permit them to drive without obtaining a licence, warning that such behaviour endangers their safety and future while exposing both the driver and vehicle owner to legal consequences.
He explained that driving without a licence carries an on-the-spot settlement fine of KD75. If the case is referred to court, fines can range between KD150 and KD300, with possible imprisonment for up to three months and vehicle impoundment for up to two months.
He added that minors caught driving illegally are referred to the juvenile prosecution authorities for legal action.
Bouhassan also warned that legal responsibility extends to vehicle owners, including parents or guardians, who knowingly allow unlicensed individuals to drive. He noted that vehicle owners may face settlement fines of up to KD50, while court penalties can range between KD100 and KD200, in addition to possible imprisonment for up to two months.
He called on parents to exercise stricter supervision over their children during the examination period and wished students success in their exams.
