Ministry of Education recovers KD 4.8 million in misused funds

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 6: As part of its ongoing efforts to preserve public funds and recover the state’s financial dues, the financial sector of the Ministry of Education has successfully recovered KD 4.8 million which was unjustly spent in previous years. According to educational sources, this amount was disbursed as summer vacation salaries to a group of teachers who were appointed at the end of the school year and, therefore, were not entitled to those salaries. The sources explained that this recovery is part of a series of reform measures taken by the ministry to control expenditures and reclaim public funds. The financial sector is currently working to recover additional amounts related to the years 2021 and 2022, as part of its commitment to comply with financial regulations and to enhance control and accountability mechanisms.

This success adds to the financial sector’s previous achievements, which included recovering other amounts earlier in the year as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at preserving public funds and ensuring transparency in financial transactions. This reform initiative marks the second such effort to recover unjustly spent public funds. In June, the ministry had reclaimed KD 2.086 million that was paid as salaries to current and former employees without entitlement, following the implementation of a fingerprint system to monitor attendance. The ministry is committed to implementing the directives of the Ministry of Finance, the Civil Service Commission, and other regulatory bodies to strengthen control and accountability mechanisms, ensuring compliance with approved financial regulations. The sources commended the efforts of the staff of the financial sector which have contributed to improving the efficiency of financial spending and accelerating workflow, along with taking necessary measures to recover the ministry’s dues.

They said these ongoing efforts have enhanced transparency and integrity in operations, emphasizing that there will be zero tolerance for any financial violations.

In addition, the sources reported that financial controllers praised the ongoing financial reforms, stating that a total of KD 7 million was recovered during the current year alone. They stressed that efforts are ongoing to reclaim more funds that were unjustly spent, as part of the state’s reform initiatives.
