Ministry of Commerce cracks down on unfair price increases

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 1, (Agencies): The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a stern warning against any artificial price hikes on essential commodities. The ministry is determined to apply the strictest penalties for those violating regulations and ministerial decrees related to unjustified price increases.

In a press release, the Ministry of Commerce emphasized that it has sent out warnings to all companies and sales outlets, instructing them not to impose any artificial price increases on essential goods in the local market. It also cautioned against any opportunistic exploitation of special occasions or material gains through unjustified price hikes and urged strict compliance with the ministry’s decisions and regulations.

The ministry’s inspection and oversight teams are actively conducting inspections across all governorates to deter such practices. It emphasized that it will not hesitate to fulfill its legal obligations to combat such violations and protect consumer rights, in accordance with Law No. 39 of 2014 on Consumer Protection, specifically Articles 12 and 13. The penalties for violations may lead to immediate closure.

These directives are in line with the guidance of His Highness the Prime Minister, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and reflect the ministry’s regulatory role and its commitment to eliminating any practices that go against the law. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, under the leadership of Minister Mohammed Al-Aiban and the direct supervision of Undersecretary Ziyad Al-Najim, is dedicated to safeguarding consumer interests.

Consumers are encouraged not to hesitate in filing complaints or reporting any such practices they encounter. They can do so through the consumer protection centers spread across the six governorates or by using the “Sahal” application. The ministry assured that its field teams are fully prepared to respond to any complaints submitted by consumers.

The Ministry of Commerce is taking a proactive stance to ensure that consumers are protected from unjustified price increases and that businesses adhere to fair and legal pricing practices. It serves as a reminder that artificial price hikes will not be tolerated, and the ministry is fully committed to maintaining a fair market for all.
