KUWAIT CITY, Nov 2: The Italian Embassy in Kuwait officially launched its cultural programme and celebrations marking the Italian National Day and Italian Unity and Armed Forces Day with a spectacular musical performance by the internationally acclaimed Italian vocal ensemble Mezzotono at the Yarmouk Cultural Center on Sunday, Nov 1.

The performance marked the official reopening of the Embassy's cultural activities following an extended interruption caused by recent developments in the region. It also brought a unique Italian musical experience to Kuwait, with Mezzotono performing in the country for the first time.

Often described as “Ambassadors of Italian Music Around the World,” Mezzotono is among Italy's most internationally acclaimed a cappella ensembles. Having performed at prestigious festivals and theatres in more than 70 countries across five continents, the group has earned international recognition for its remarkable ability to recreate the sound of an entire orchestra using only five human voices.

Welcoming guests, the Italian Ambassador to Kuwait expressed his pleasure at the large turnout and described the occasion as an important milestone in the resumption of the Embassy's cultural programme.

He thanked Dar Al Athar al Islamiyyah and the Yarmouk Cultural Center team for their hospitality and valuable support in organizing the event, while also acknowledging the dedication and professionalism of the Italian Embassy team.

Introducing the ensemble, the Ambassador explained that a cappella music, derived from the Italian expression meaning “in the chapel” or “in the style of the chapel,” originally referred to sacred choral music performed without instrumental accompaniment. Over the years, however, the musical form evolved beyond its religious origins to embrace a wide range of styles, including classical madrigals, barbershop quartets, contemporary pop, rap and beatboxing.

Unlike conventional choir performances, modern a cappella allows singers to recreate the sounds of multiple instruments through their voices, combining harmony, bass, percussion and solo vocals without instrumental backing.

The Ambassador encouraged the audience to close their eyes during the opening song and experience the different layers of sound, challenging them to identify the drums, basslines and harmonies despite the absence of musical instruments, recorded tracks or electronic accompaniment.

He also highlighted the interactive nature of Mezzotono's performances, inviting the audience to participate and become part of the musical experience.

The ensemble lived up to its international reputation with an entertaining and varied programme that brought together Italian musical heritage, international classics, Latin rhythms, jazz and popular music, combining vocal virtuosity with humour, theatrical expression and audience interaction.

The evening opened with “Mambo Italiano” by Bob Merrill, immediately setting an energetic tone. This was followed by a Brazilian-themed medley featuring Figlio Unico, Tristezza, La Banda, Oh Che Sarà, L'Appuntamento and La Voglia La Pazzia.

The group continued with the much-loved Cuban song “Guantanamera,” followed by “The Circle of Life,” composed by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice. The programme also featured Cime di Rape, Reet Petite and an entertaining Tom Jones medley comprising It's Not Unusual, Sex Bomb, Delilah, What's New Pussycat?, Green, Green Grass of Home and Kiss.

The performance continued with the Italian favourites “Quando, Quando, Quando” and “Buonasera Signorina,” bringing the evening's musical journey to a memorable close.

Throughout the performance, the five singers demonstrated exceptional vocal coordination, transforming their voices into an orchestra of melodies, rhythms and harmonies without relying on traditional musical instruments.

The combination of Italian classics, international hits, comedy and audience engagement made the evening an engaging celebration of music and cultural exchange.

The event underscored the Italian Embassy's commitment to strengthening cultural relations between Italy and Kuwait through music and the performing arts, while providing the Kuwaiti audience and international community with an opportunity to experience the creativity and richness of Italian musical tradition.
