DUBAI, Mar 6: Residents of Dubai have received mass text alerts warning them about their social media activity. The messages, reportedly sent by Dubai Police, warned that “photographing or sharing security or critical sites, or reposting unreliable information, may result in legal action and compromise national security and stability.” No further details were provided.
The alert follows a similar, though stronger, warning issued by Bahrain amid ongoing regional tensions related to the Iran conflict.
The United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven sheikhdoms including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is considered socially liberal compared with many of its neighbors. However, the country maintains strict laws on freedom of expression and prohibits political parties and labor unions.
