Mark Zuckerberg’s superyacht sparks social media debate

CALIFORNIA, Feb 1: Tech billionaire and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is facing criticism after a video of his new 387-foot superyacht surfaced online, igniting debate over environmental responsibility among the ultra-wealthy.

The vessel, built by Feadship and powered by four MTU diesel engines, can reportedly reach speeds of 21 knots and travel up to 6,000 nautical miles. A brief clip showing the yacht cruising alongside its support boat, Wingman, appeared on social media, where Redditors and other users shared images and observations of the vessel anchored in a secluded area of the Gulf of California.

Observers noted heavy use of the yacht’s helicopter and speculated about the presence of a wake surfing boat, jet skis, and a dinghy. One Reddit user wrote, “I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a dingy somewhere in there. Definitely jetskis and whatnot.”

While the vessel showcases extreme luxury, critics highlight the environmental impact of superyachts. Humanitarian group Oxfam has called for stricter regulations and taxation on superyachts and private jets, arguing that such measures could provide needed revenue for governments. CNN has reported that annual maintenance costs for these vessels can reach at least 10 percent of the purchase price, with Zuckerberg’s yacht estimated at $300 million and support vessels like Jeff Bezos’ costing $100 million.

Social media reactions have been mixed. Some users expressed outrage, with one commenting, “Somebody sink it,” while others offered more measured perspectives, noting the rarity of owning such a vessel. Several users also criticized what they perceive as contradictions between Zuckerberg’s climate advocacy and the high-emission yacht purchase. Posts using phrases such as “Net zero for thee, but not for me” circulated widely, reflecting concerns about environmental double standards among billionaires.

The debate extended beyond climate issues, with some linking the controversy to broader concerns about Meta’s business practices and data privacy, suggesting that free access to the platform comes at a hidden cost to users.

The incident underscores growing scrutiny of the ultra-wealthy regarding their environmental footprint and whether their actions align with public statements on climate responsibility.
