LOS ANGELES, Sept 9: Mariah Carey is taking time to heal after a significant loss.
Following the deaths of her mother, Patricia Hickey, and her sister, Alison Carey, on the same day in August, Mariah has shared a heartfelt update with her fans. On September 8, she posted a video on Instagram, captioning it: “Back at work. It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!” In the video, the 55-year-old singer performs her song “It’s Like That” in a black corseted gown, accompanied by a piano.
This post marks Mariah’s return to social media after the recent loss of her mother and sister. In an August 26 statement to E! News, Mariah expressed her grief: “My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” She continued, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Mariah has not provided further details about the causes of death for Patricia and Alison. Over the years, she has been open about her complicated relationships with her mother, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, and her sister Alison. Mariah also has a second sister, Morgan.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she discussed the complexities of her relationship with her mother: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities,” she wrote. “It's never been only black-and-white—it's been a whole rainbow of emotions.” Mariah described how, despite their shared love of music, she experienced jealousy from her mother as she grew older. “Having people you love be jealous of you professionally comes with the territory of success," she wrote, "but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it's particularly painful.”
Mariah, who shares 13-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with ex-husband Nick Cannon, also reflected on how early experiences with her mother affected her. She recounted how her mother’s misguided words shaped her childhood. Additionally, Mariah described troubling experiences with her sister Alison, including being drugged, offered cocaine, and enduring third-degree burns. “I am still struggling through that time,” she noted.
