Man Arrested in Kuwait for Promoting Marijuana on Social Media

KUWAIT CITY, Jul 5: Kuwait's Ministry of Interior has arrested a man accused of promoting marijuana through videos posted on a social media platform, as authorities continue their campaign against narcotics and online drug-related content.

The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Security Sector, represented by the General Directorate for Drug Control, after investigators monitored content that portrayed marijuana as a harmless substance and spread what officials described as misleading claims about its use.

According to the ministry, the videos presented marijuana in a positive light and could have encouraged followers—particularly young people—to experiment with the drug, posing a threat to public safety and society.

Following an investigation, authorities identified and arrested the suspect. During questioning, he admitted that the videos were uploaded to his personal social media account and confessed to publishing the content.

Legal action has been initiated against him, and he has been referred to the competent judicial authorities.

The Ministry of Interior said the suspect's actions constitute a violation of Decree-Law No. 159 of 2025 on combating narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and regulating their use and trade.

Under Article 51 of the law, anyone who incites or encourages the commission of drug-related offences through persuasion, inducement, or any other means may face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to KD5,000, or both.

The ministry reiterated that it will take firm action against anyone who promotes narcotic substances or publishes content that encourages drug use or misleads the public about the dangers of narcotics.

It also urged the public to comply with the law and avoid being influenced by misleading information that could jeopardize the security and well-being of society
