Maldives inaugurates 1st military air station to strengthen airspace surveillance

COLOMBO, Nov 6, (Xinhua): Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the Maldives National Defence Force's first dedicated air station, the Gan Air Station, PSM News, the Maldives' state media, reported.

The commissioning of the Gan Air Station followed a presidential decree issued on Nov. 3, the report said. Under the decree, the Air Corps is required to maintain continuous 24-hour surveillance over the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone and support national security operations.

The Maldivian Air Corps was formally established on March 15, 2024, and the opening of the station was to operationalize the first air base. The base will support aircraft operations, surveillance flights, and monitoring missions across the island nation's vast ocean territory
