Tel Aviv, Nov 22: Israel has given approval to a negotiated deal with Hamas, whereby 50 hostages held by the group would be released in exchange for a temporary four-day cease-fire in Gaza. This agreement, mediated by Qatar, was overwhelmingly endorsed by the Israeli Cabinet after more than six hours of debate, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough since the beginning of the conflict. As part of the deal, Hamas is set to release 50 hostages out of the 240 taken during their October 7 attack. The release will occur over the course of the four-day cease-fire. The pause in fighting may extend for additional days for every 10 hostages released by Hamas.

President Biden welcomed the deal, expressing hope for additional American hostages to be released. The agreement also involves the release of Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons. Israel has committed to allowing more fuel into Gaza and providing significant humanitarian aid, including medical supplies.

Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would resume its offensive against Hamas once the temporary truce expires, aiming to achieve its goals and ensure the security of Israel. The reported deal aims to create a major pause in the ongoing conflict that has resulted in a substantial loss of life on both sides. The cease-fire is expected to bring relief to those in Gaza affected by the intense bombardment and ground assault by Israel.
