ISTANBUL, Turkey, Nov 4, (Agencies): Mainz 05, a prominent German Bundesliga football club, took the decision to terminate the contract of Anwar El Ghazi on Friday due to a pro-Palestine social media post related to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.
In a statement released by Mainz 05, the club announced, "FSV Mainz 05 terminated their contract with Anwar El Ghazi with immediate effect on Friday. The club has taken this action in response to comments and posts from the player on social media."
This decision followed a series of events involving the player. In the previous month, Mainz 05 had suspended Anwar El Ghazi after he posted a social media story expressing his support for the people of Palestine. However, the suspension was lifted by the German top-tier side, and he was made available for selection again after receiving a warning on Monday.
In response to the termination of his contract, Anwar El Ghazi shared his thoughts, stating, "Stand for what is right, even if it means standing alone." He went on to emphasize, "The loss of my livelihood is nothing when compared to the hell being unleashed on the innocent and vulnerable in Gaza."
Anwar El Ghazi, a Dutch winger of Moroccan descent, previously played a significant role in helping PSV Eindhoven secure victories in the Dutch Super Cup and the Dutch Cup. The 28-year-old player also has two caps for the Netherlands national team.
