LPG Tanker Carrying 28 Indian Crew Attacked in Strait of Hormuz

NEW DELHI, Jul 24: All 28 Indian crew members aboard a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker are safe after the vessel came under attack Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Indian Embassy in Iran.

The embassy said the Mozambique-flagged Meda was attacked while sailing in Iranian territorial waters. In a post on X, it said Indian authorities were in close contact with relevant officials and were closely monitoring the situation.

No injuries among the Indian crew were reported, and the embassy did not immediately provide details on the nature of the attack or the extent of any damage to the vessel.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region following US President Donald Trump's announcement on July 8 that the ceasefire outlined in last month's US-Iran memorandum of understanding was no longer in effect.

Since then, the United States and Iran have exchanged military strikes, with Washington targeting sites inside Iran and Tehran claiming attacks on US military facilities and equipment across several countries in the region.

The escalating conflict has disrupted shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over global energy supplies, prompting intermittent airspace closures, and fueling warnings of further attacks on US facilities and interests across the Middle East.
