KUWAIT CITY, May 23: More than 45 days have passed since the Cabinet decided to completely isolate Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Mahboula areas, but the announced figures of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area have exceeded the threshold of 1,000 cases, compared to 202 cases recorded in Mahboula.

In an exclusive survey conducted for the daily by the “Social Watcher” platform, the number of cases registered in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Mahboula areas were 1,261 since May 8; this is since the time Ministry of Health started announcing the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in these areas daily.

The case count in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area went up to 1,059, constituting about 5.8 percent of the total cases recorded in Kuwait. On the other hand, the Mahboula counter stopped at 202 cases as per the ministry’s data. These two areas had continued to register new cases despite the total lockdown that came into effect 45 days ago.

This raises questions about the feasibility and effectiveness of the lockdown, and why it seems to have succeeded to some extent in Mahboula area and failed in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area despite their similar demographic and living configurations.

Undoubtedly, the answers to such questions will serve as a launch pad for researchers and those interested in assessing the extent of the effect of the same decision in two different locations that are similar in circumstances but with opposite results.

However, it will implicitly indicate which of the two expected outcomes will be witnessed for Kuwait after the end of the total lockdown imposed since May 10, especially with 10,986 cases recorded since May 10, which is a daily average of about 915 cases. It is worth mentioning that the Cabinet had decided on April 6 to impose total lockdown of Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Mahboula areas in order to examine and treat the residents there as well as to contain the spread of COVID-19 to other parts of the country.

This was followed by a total lockdown in the country from May 10 to May 30, in bid to address and contain the consequences of the COVID- 19 spread based on the recommendations of the health authorities.
